What does the band Metallica have in common with a lovely tuxedo and a good night’s sleep? They both have black themes. Even in famous stories like the
creation of the earth and in popular Greek mythology, pitch-black darkness have played very significant roles. It’s a color (or a non-color) that flourishes in the absence of light. What benefits would a place devoid of the wonderful brightness of sunshine even be able to provide? Plenty, actually.
In these days when work-at-home culture and night shift jobs abound, there is an increasing need to create artificial darkness. Alatonin, a hormone that is secreted by our body during daytime, is naturally triggered by the light. Once a person wakes up, exposure to light helps in becoming energetic and alert. If one needs to have sufficient sleep in spite of the time of day, blackout curtains are needed so that his alatonin levels will be kept low. A totally dark atmosphere also keeps the vision clear of any possible distraction or any moving object that can easily rob one of calm composure much needed for a satisfying rest.
Sometimes, even the seemingly thickest of curtains can’t block out all light from outside. To make a room pitch-black, special weaving processes are needed to process the fabric. Ordinary fabrics have not undergone this kind of weaving, and are thus incapable of keeping off all light from the bedroom, movie room or presentation hall.
What Can Be Done To Ensure Total Darkness?
Use an additional dark lining for extra blockage of the sun’s very strong rays. Make sure that the sides don’t allow sunlight to sneak in by using a rod that is longer than the width of the window.
What else can be removed to ensure an atmosphere of quiet?
A sense of undisturbed solitude can be achieved not only by keeping out light. There is also the ever-present noise pollution even in cities far from the capital. Traffic is the main culprit in most places that are near commercial establishments in the downtown areas. Because of the unique fabrication of these
curtains, some varieties also offer noise reduction for double convenience and comfort.
However, it is not only the central area that needs to be watched after when it comes to noise. Rural residences and establishments are also prone to noise that are caused by animals, or nearby construction projects. This is especially true of those in the very peripheries of the big cities. Their gradual accumulation into the center of economic activity makes them even more exposed to the strident sounds of bulldozers and other heavy machinery.
The light-eliminating properties also make these draperies thermal, effectively conserving energy that is otherwise wastefully thrown out of the window. Closing them during heat-intense days of summer days keeps the heat out, and keeping them open on bright winter days to maximize the sun’s heating abilities.
Though work is very important especially when financial crises abound all over the world, there is much concern about people’s changing sleeping habits because of too much labor. It’s about time that humans actually benefit from what technology they have developed, and utilize products like blackout
curtains in enhancing their health and well-being.
