The Curtain Rod

Accent Pieces

When we think of a curtain rod, the majority of us just think of the bar we hang our curtains on. Today, curtain rods have become a vital part of any room décor. There are so many styles and materials to choose from, any preference can add just the right accent to your window. Whether you prefer extravagance, elegance or simplicity. Your curtains will look more dressed up than ever before and people will notice.

Parts of a Curtain Rod

You may not think the elements that make up your rod are important, but they are. A curtain rod is made up of three basic parts. The rod itself, the finial, and the brackets. The rod is what you have the curtain from. The finial is the end piece, usually the more decorative piece. These pieces can be interchangeable, so you aren’t committed to one look forever. The brackets are attached to the wall and hold your rod. These pieces can also be decorative and there are many different types.

Materials

The curtain rods that we have all come accustomed to are thin, white, aluminum rods that clip on to metal clasps. This is an ancient sort of idea and is slowly dying out. Now you can find rods made out of wood, wrought iron, and even crystal. All of the materials are much more durable than the decrepit aluminum rods we used to use. These curtain rods are sure to last you many years.

Choosing a Rod

You will first need to take measurements of your window. Make sure you choose the window curtains you want to hang as well and decipher any oddities they may have. Rods come in different sizes so you want to make sure your curtain will slide effortlessly onto your rod. The next step is choosing a material. Make sure it is something you like and something that will fit in to the rest of your décor. The last thing you will want to do is choose the color if it applies. If you are using a colored rod, let it contrast with your curtain somewhat so that it stands out.

Picking the Perfect Finial

Finials can be difficult to choose. There are many, many different kinds of finials to choose from. This may be your most time consuming step. First, it needs to match the rod. You do not want to mix materials or colors. Second, make sure you really like the way it looks. If you prefer more dainty details, you will not want a big or clunky finial. Let it match your personality.

Brackets for the Finish

Brackets are now more diverse and fun. These will tie up your look and finish your rod. Picking the right one is really just a matter of what you like and keeping it in tune with your preferred look.

Now that you know what curtain rods can do for you, don’t you think it’s time to let your window “dress up” for a change?
