A curtain serves two purposes, it gives a certain tone to the inside of the home, and it also cuts down on the amount of sunlight that comes in. There are only two things that you can have against them, one is that they do not look like curtains and the other is that they tend to cost more, but then you can work around that too. For instance, you have the curtain roman blinds that come with curtains on either side. Of course you cannot draw them close, but they actually look much better than if you had curtains in the room.
Added to all this is that because they are raised and lowered instead of being pulled from side to side, you get better control over how much sunlight comes into the home.
