Roman Shades: The Many Different Types

Roman Shades are window treatments that can add style and elegance to your space. They are available in many styles and made of various materials. They are safe if you have children and provide privacy. Due to their flexibility they are becoming a popular choice for home decor. They have better temperature control than any other shades.

Like other window coverings you can choose the fabric that will be used. If you want to block the sunlight or if your house is in a busy place then you will use an opaque fabric for the shades but if you like sunlight to come in then you can use plain sheer light fabric. Let’s look at the various types of Roman shades that are available:

1. Hobbled Shade

These are used in formal settings but can be used casually also. All you need to do is to adjust the fabric that is to be used. Plain sheer light fabric can be used if you want to use them causally and, on the other hand, an expensive fabric that gives an elegant look will be used when used formally. Hobbled shades can be folded softly when lowered.

2. Flat Shade

Flat shades are the most common type of shades. They are light weight and extremely flexible. The fabric can vary depending on the desired usage. Silk and light linen fabric gives the room a relaxed atmosphere whereas heavy fabrics such as heavy linen give the room a structured look. This flat shade does not have fabric interruptions and works best with a nicely designed fabric. It gives the room a simple and classic look.

3. Balloon Shade

Balloon shade is the most formal shade out of all the shades. At the bottom it has waterfall of balloon shaped hassock. This hassock is permanent when the shade is fully extended. When the shades are drawn up, the hassock pile at the bottom and become larger and even curls back. The fabric for the balloon shade will certainly depend on the size of the shade. Both light and heavy fabrics can be used. If the shade is a big one, the amount of fabric will also be large and will make the shade heavy. Soft fabrics clothe easily and do not require much attention and maintenance whereas if a heavy fabric us used it needs to be dressed every time it is used.

4. London Shade

London shade is a lavish one and has tucks at the bottom and flat at the top. It has fan shaped tails on the end due to which it is commonly known as dog ears. Softer fabrics like silk cover the shade nicely and heavy fabrics require dressing each time they are raised.

Shades like these require low maintenance. The only thing that you need to do is to keep them clean so they look as new as ever. The fabrics should be chosen with utmost care. It should be kept in mind if the shade can bear the burden of the heavy fabric and if not then light or soft fabric should be used.
