Traditionally, vertical blinds are employed in windows which have more width than height. Therefore, it would be fair to say that they usually are used on sliding doors made of
glass or any other large window that has the bigger width to height ratio. They are produced in many colors, many materials and an abundant variety of shapes and specific sizes.
Choices
First, take a look at the various colors and materials that are typically found in vertical blinds. Among them, you have: “cellular”, aluminum, wood (usually faux, but nevertheless very real-looking), vinyl, fabric and other genuine and synthetic materials—like PVC. Fashionable colors have always been the more neutral colors (off white, beige, Earthy-browns, clay, etc), but come in any color that best adapts to your interior decor.
Vertical shades also offer the same functionality as other types of blinds and shapes. Generally, they are highly-energy efficient, as they allow or block as much or little sunlight as you desire. Here are some of the biggest sellers:
- Fabric vertical blinds: These provide a great-looking alternative to the old plain-white “plasticky” kind of yesteryear. Rich textures and ornate color schemes add a remarkable bit of flair to just about any room.
- Sheer blinds: These verticals are partially made of soft, exquisite sheer (with a vinyl or similar material in the inside to provide the rigidness a blind must have). They offer all of the functions of regular blinds, plus they ship in some of the most beautiful colors known-to man—as only fitting of such a lustrous material.
- Vinyl blinds, or vinyl blind slats: They are a more cost-efficient variety of shades and boast the same elegant, energy-absorbing designs that the rest of the pack do. Also, they are one of the strongest, most durable and most “form-preserving” breed of shade on the market.
- Aluminum shades: Contrary to the word “aluminum”, which would normally be indicative of an alloy, these shades can be manufactured to resemble anything from opaque fabrics to faux-woods. One potential downside exists, though: if they are ever bent or smashed, they’re basically unsalvageable.
Functionality/Versatility
Not only do they help-keep the sun out and maximize A/C energy-efficiency, they also protect your interior furnishings (particularly those made of wood, fabric and leather) from the damaging effects of the sun.
In a space where a horizontal shade or cloth drapery would look pretty awkward, vertical blinds are the perfect solution. One could almost say that they fill a niche-market.
Often times privacy is an issue. That’s why these shades come in many different styles to best suit the room they are going to compliment. For example, if they are going on the sliding glass window in the bathroom then obviously thicker, darker and more closely spaced blinds are going to be the most favorable. For a great room, the color and texture needs to accent the design of the room, provide enough spacing to let light in when you need it, and block it out when you do not.A bedroom may call for blackout blinds.
